December 2001 Parent Info Sheet

Our article in the last Newsletter on the Harry Potter movie was very well received. People expressing how helpful it had been. So now with the first of the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies due out shortly it is appropriate to pass some comment especially as many parents are comparing the two.

‘The Fellowship of the Rings’ (The first of Director Peter Jackson’s adaptations of JRR Tolkien’s trilogy) is in fact rather different from the Potter movie. Although this is only a very brief synopsis of all that could be said, we believe Christian parents can take a difference stance with their children in regard to the viewing of these critically acclaimed epics.

Firstly of course Tolkien was a bold, devout Christian. His books relied strongly on his faith. Rowling has made no such claims.

His fantasy tales are mythopoetic – meaning they are set in worlds disassociated from the real world.

JK Rowling ‘Potter’ fantasies are set firmly in the real world.

Tolkien’s work clearly distinguishes between good & evil, emphasising the consequence of each. For example when a ‘good’ character commits evil, atonement must be made for their action. In Potter stories moral ambiguity is abundant.

Tolkien’s ‘magic’ (and he did not like to use that word, but could find no other suitable) is not supernatural, but a natural ability – or as he puts it – “ ‘art’ without human limitations.” His wizards are in fact illustrations of angels; good & bad (fallen), their powers part of their nature. Rowling magic is occult based and pagan in origin. It could be more accurately called ‘magick’. A craft to be learnt and possessed by.

With regard to the movie itself the previews would indicate that some of the scenes and characters would be too frightening for young children. And at the very least, using the above comments as a guide, we would suggest preparing older children in advance of viewing the film.

With these things in mind we encourage parents to be prayerful. Seeking the Lord for wisdom and guidance. We all want to protect our children without limiting the enjoyment of childhood!
